I am often asked this question;  is short term disability or long term disability insurance worth it?  Although many of these claims do end up being challenged by the insurance company, the short answer is usually yes.

Often times, your employer offers disability insurance for free, or for a small premium.  These benefits are usually governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).  Special rules, and enrollment periods apply.  You should talk to your HR representative to find out what coverage is available to you, and what you need to do to enroll.

If you do not have short or long term disability at work, private insurance policies are available.  It is always important to read the policy carefully BEFORE you buy it, to know exactly what is covered.
