TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury)

Traumatic brain injury, or a TBI, usually results from a violent blow or jolt to the head or body. They can occur from a car accident, a fall, being struck on the head by falling merchandise at a store, or in many other situations.  a TBI can be characterized as mild, moderate or severe.  Mild traumatic brain injury may affect your brain cells temporarily. More-serious traumatic brain injury can result in bruising, torn tissues, bleeding and other physical damage to the brain. These injuries can result in long-term complications or death.

A TBI is usually accompanied by a combination of physical and other symptoms:

  • Loss of consciousness for a few seconds to a few minutes or in severe cases days
  • No loss of consciousness, but a state of being dazed, confused or disoriented
  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Problems with speech
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Sleeping more than usual
  • Dizziness or loss of balance
  • Confusion
  • Agitation or other unusual behavior
  • Slurred speech
